Lagunitas Lucky 13
Lagunitas Brewing Company is a plucky outfit located in Petaluma, Calif. that has been brewing beer since 1993 with a throw-caution-to-the-wind attitude. Their motto is “Beer speaks. People mumble.” and when you break out their seasonal offering, Lucky 13, you will see why. The beer was first brewed in 2006 to celebrate their 13th year of existence and has proved to be so popular that they bring it back every year at the beginning of summer. The recipe can change from year to year so if you have had it before, don’t worry, there is always something new to discover here.
This years version is advertised on the label as “A Mondo Large Red Ale” and clocks in at 8.65 percent and 77 IBU’s (The International Bittering Units scale, or simply IBU scale, provides a measure of the bitterness of beer) so get ready for a ride when you open it up! Lucky 13 is rated a 92 out of a 100 on the Beer Advocate website and 98 out of 100 on Rate Beer.com so the expectations are high! These guys are famous for not following the rules so this should be fun.
The beer has a lovely hazy reddish-orange appearance with a two-finger head when poured into my pint glass. Lucky 13 offers excellent lacing on the sides with a citrusy, piney aroma and a hint of biscuit from the malt. The mouth feel is pleasant with a nice hit of hops up front that mellows quickly and leaves a slightly chewy, hoppy after taste. Over all an excellent, well constructed beer that delivers a smooth, enjoyable experience that I would recommend enjoying after a long day outside. So sit down in your favorite deck chair and watch the sun slowly sink as you unwind with this great brew. I know that’s exactly what I am going to do.
This beer can be found at grocery stores and liquor stores. For more information visit the Lagunitas website at www.lagunitas.com.
