White Wine of the Week
2011 McIntyre Estate Block K-1 Chardonnay, $38
Santa Lucia Highlands would certainly qualify as one of the ideal places for growing Chardonnay with depth, class and style. Kudos to winegrower Steve McIntyre and winemaker Byron Kusuge, for creating as rich a beverage as you can in what turned out to be a lean growing season. For the K-1 Chardonnay, they trimmed the usual two clusters per shoot down to one, concentrating the flavors and reducing the yields.
Aromas of butter-seared pears, gardenias, baked rum-spiked apples and fresh-from-the-oven vanilla hazelnut scones, announce a heady, bordering on hedonistic experience.
Flavors of sweet cream biscuits with apple butter and honeycomb, ripe Tuscan melon, papaya and a healthy dose of lanolin, along with a mouth-filling texture of waxed linen and pervasive minerality, combine to make this a buxom, Dolly Partonesque beverage. Paired with golden apple-raisin bread pudding, crab quiche or lobster thermidor, this would be heavenly.
