Wine of the Week
A White, a Red and a Port
By Ruthe Roberts
My husband and I recently went to dinner with friends at Enoteca La Storia in Los Gatos. It was our first time going there and it was definitely an evening to “write home about.”
We wanted to start with a new white. I carry a Torrontes in my shop by one of our local winemakers and I love it, so we tried the Zolo 2013 Torrontes ($14) from Argentina (also available at BevMo). It has a beautiful nose of flowers and citrus with a dry finish. It went perfectly with the four plates we selected. Alle-Pia Nduja: Spreadable Salami with a light hint of spice. Carboncino cheese: A soft, supple, sweet, buttery and rich pasteurized cheese with an ivory paste and ashed rind from Langhe. Rovagnati Ham with Black Truffles: Cooked ham with truffles. The Three Olive Sampler: A selection of olives from three different regions of Italy. The crisp freshness of the Torrontes against the spreadable salami, Ham with Truffles and the Carboncino cheese along with the olives….oh my…my palate was in heaven!
We then of course had to move on to a new red wine of some kind, so we went for the 2012 Brassfield Eruption ($19) which is a gorgeous blend of Syrah, Malbec, Mourvèdre, and Petite Sirah – once again, WOW, my palate was excited by this rich and full bodied, big fruit and well balanced wine. What to pair with it you ask? Well, we had Prosciutto wrapped Langherino: Soft cheese wrapped in prosciutto and baked. Bruschetta with Burrata: Tomatoes, basil, red onions, olive oil and burrata cheese on focaccia. The Bruschetta on the deliciously soft crispy bread was the tastiest and most flavorful I’ve had – oh my, I melted! The baked Prosciutto was perfectly melted goodness. Both went wonderfully with the Brassfield Eruption.
Last but not least, dessert: Graham’s 10 Year Tawny Port with Chocolate lava cake with ganache filling topped with a raspberry Zinfandel Sauce. This, my friends, was the perfect finish to a great meal. I am a Port fanatic, and this is one I am adding to my list of must haves.
Cheers and yumminess to you all!
