White Wine of the Week
A Pick From Her VineNess
2012 Steven Kent “Merrillie” Chardonnay, Livermore Valley, $34
This wine, named in honor of proprietor, Steven Kent Mirassou’s grandmother, is an ode to classic, elegant, reserved, yet perfectly-coiffed Chardonnay. Done in both American and French oak, it has all the rich mouthfeel and creamy vanilla of oak, yet retains the minerality and acidity you want in a wine built for enjoying both now and later. The fruit comes from the Landucci Vineyard, named for Merrillie’s maiden name, and is an old Wente clone of Chardonnay.
Generous aromas of white peaches and White Linen perfume are fascinating, and the lovely flavors of Braeburn apples, white fig and gooseberry, combine with the creamy oak, delivering a long, delightful finish. This wine would be superb with chicken fricassee or a chicken salad with apples, chopped fennel and sour cream.
This wine can be purchased at the winery, located at 5443 Tesla Road in Livermore, or on the Steven Kent website.
