Rosé of the Week
A Pick from HerVineness
2012 Beauregard Saignée of Pinot Noir Rosé, Coast Grade Vineyard, Santa Cruz Mountains, 13.5% Alcohol, $35
Oozing strawberries and raspberries galore, with a snort of redwood greenery, this rosé is like a stunning ingénue, sashaying down the runway with the confidence of a vibrant young woman who knows she’s got it going on. Her youthful energy conveys the debut of this new coastal vineyard, which was planted in 2008 at 1,350 feet, three miles from the Pacific. Yep, that was the year of that horrible Lockheed fire that pretty much ruined a lot of grapes for harvest that year. The vineyard is on the site of the former Cemex/Lonestar limestone quarry, a solid bed of limestone, which comes as no surprise. The clones are Pommard, 828, 667 & 115, and the fruit picks up the amazing minerality of the cool site, which lies not far from the Pacific’s foggy knuckles. It’s directly west of the beautiful hamlet of Bonny Doon, where the Beauregard tasting room lurks among the redwoods.
